Oyster Bay High School is proud to announce that Abigail Rudnet has been selected as one of only 24 standout high school musical theatre performers to participate in the 2nd Annual Great Neck Plaza MusicFest Challenge. Abigail was chosen from a competitive pool of more than 50 talented applicants across the region and will showcase her musical theatre skills in this prestigious, adjudicated competition.

The MusicFest Challenge will take place on Tuesday, June 17 from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m. at Firefighters Park in Great Neck Plaza, with a rain date scheduled for June 18. The event promises an evening of top-tier performances judged by professionals from the entertainment industry and competitors will have the opportunity to win cash prizes.

This is an exciting honor for Abigail and a proud moment for OBHS, as she represents the school with her remarkable talent and dedication to the performing arts. We look forward to cheering her on as she takes the stage!

On June 10, Oyster Bay High School was pleased to welcome Samantha Augeri, weekday evening meteorologist at News 12 Long Island, for a special weathercast workshop with students in the broadcast journalism program.

Ms. Augeri visited the Bay Broadcasting Studio to observe a taping of the “Bay News Now” newscast, provide professional feedback and share strategies for enhancing the weather segment. Her visit included a brief presentation followed by a Q&A session, during which students asked insightful questions about careers in both broadcast journalism and meteorology.

She was joined by Brian Jingeleski, Chief Field Photographer at News 12 and an Emmy Award-winning videographer. Mr. Jingeleski brought an ENG (Electronic News Gathering) camera to demonstrate how news footage is captured in the field, giving students a hands-on introduction to professional videography techniques.

Both Ms. Augeri and Mr. Jingeleski are former News 12 colleagues of Mr. Alex Dollin, OBHS’s TV Production and Multimedia Journalism teacher. Their visit highlighted the importance of maintaining professional relationships and how those connections can lead to impactful educational experiences.

During the Q&A, Ms. Augeri and Mr. Jingeleski shared career insights, industry advice and specific tips for improving the “Bay News Now” weather segment. Their expertise offered students a valuable, real-world perspective on the fast-paced world of television news.

Last week, fourth graders from James H. Vernon Elementary School took part in an engaging and educational outdoor assembly led by representatives from PSEG Long Island.

Held on the blacktop, the demonstration focused on safety around electricity and power lines - an especially important topic as summer begins and children spend more time outdoors. PSEG workers discussed real-life scenarios and provided valuable safety tips, such as the dangers of metal pool nets coming into contact with overhead wires and the importance of staying far away from any downed power lines.

Each student received a complimentary hard hat to take home as a reminder of the day’s important lessons.

On Wednesday, second grade students from Theodore Roosevelt School got a special preview of what’s to come as they prepare to become Vernon third graders this fall.

The students arrived by bus with their teachers and were warmly welcomed into the building, where they split into small groups and joined various third grade classrooms. There, current third graders gave thoughtful presentations about their favorite parts of Vernon and shared helpful tips about what incoming students can expect when they start school in September.

Following the classroom visits, upper grade student ambassadors led tours of the building, giving second graders the opportunity to explore Vernon’s many exciting spaces, including the art room, new music wing, cafeteria, gym, STEM lab and library.

The visit wrapped up in the cafeteria with a meet-and-greet, where students were introduced to all the third grade teachers and both school principals.

The event left the second graders feeling excited and reassured about the upcoming transition and eager to officially join the Vernon family this fall.
